I initiated "Weaving the Sacred", an artist residency in collaboration with the Creative Sri Don Chai Project and Professor Pollavat Praphattong of Mae Fah Luang University. The residency brought together a group of Tai Lue elder weavers (P'Nong, Mae King, Mae Ok, Mae Yod) to explore how can weaving unveil our relationships with the sacred?
Working with paper cutting artist Kritsadanai Somboonmai to translate oral stories into tangible visual forms, and with community coordinator Kru Saeng Duan as cultural bridge, the residency created the conditions for weavers who had never thought of themselves as storytellers to begin encoding their cosmological knowledge and their ancestral memory into large-scale textile works. Two weavers, P'Nong and Mae King, continued through the full residency process and what emerged in them was a shift that went beyond craft: a growing sense of themselves as artists with something urgent to say.
